ABB Ability System 800xA 7.0 marks the latest evolution of ABB’s flagship Distributed Control System (DCS), designed to help industrial operations modernise with confidence and continuity.
As industries face increasingly complex automation, cybersecurity and digital integration challenges, this new release delivers a robust foundation for both current operations and future growth.
System 800xA 7.0 is delivered as a Long-Term Support (LTS) release, offering a stable, predictable platform that supports both existing installations and new projects. It extends compatibility across multiple Microsoft operating systems and virtualisation environments, giving users greater flexibility when planning upgrades or infrastructure refreshes.
Key enhancements in version 7.0 include:
Modular Delivery through Extension Packs
A new software delivery approach that lets users stay on a core release while adopting new features on an independent lifecycle, therefore reducing major upgrade events and minimizing operational risk and lifecycle costs.
Broad OS and Virtualisation Support
Compatibility with recent Windows Server releases (2025/2022) and desktop platforms (Windows 11/10), plus support for VMware and Hyper-V virtualization, gives teams flexibility in how they deploy and manage their control environments.
Enhanced Cybersecurity and System Hardening
Built-in protections include native Microsoft Defender integration, compliance with IEC 62443 security standards, improved certificate handling and updated core components – helping secure critical systems against evolving cyber threats.
Improved Engineering and Connectivity
System 800xA 7.0 expands connectivity options with enhanced OPC UA client/server support, Ethernet-APL device integration and network-centric I/O performance. It also supports the latest Modular Type Package (MTP) standards, improving interoperability in modular production environments.
